In northern Uttar Pradesh, India, over 100 people have died following a stampede at a religious gathering in Hathras district. According to District Magistrate Ashish Kumar, the tragic event occurred in a village roughly 200 kilometers southeast of New Delhi. The stampede happened as a large crowd attempted to leave a Hindu satsang event organized by local religious leader Bhole Baba.

The Associated Press reported that up to 15,000 attendees were present in a space meant for 5,000, contributing to the overcrowding. A local official mentioned to AFP that a dust storm may have also blinded people, exacerbating the panic as they tried to exit. A witness told the Press Trust of India that some people fell into a roadside drain and were crushed when others fell on top of them. Among the deceased were several women and children.

Images and videos on social media depict bodies strewn across the ground, and the injured were transported to local hospitals. Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Mahant Yogi Adityanath, announced on his X account that a team has been formed to investigate the incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sadness over the tragedy during an appearance before the Indian parliament on Tuesday. He emphasized his commitment to providing all possible aid to the injured.

Deadly stampedes are not uncommon during religious festivals in India, where large crowds gather in confined spaces with limited safety measures.
