Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called for an immediate investigation into complaints about passport applications at the Nigerian Embassy in London. Tunji-Ojo announced this via his official X handle on Wednesday.
The complaints came to light after Nigerian nationals in the UK protested at the high commission in London over significant delays in passport issuance. SaharaReporters reported that the protesters, who gathered on Wednesday morning, expressed frustration over waiting more than six months for their passports.
In various videos shared on X, the protesters voiced their anger about the delays and the imposition of additional fees. “Two weeks turned into six months. Enough is enough. No more delays,” one protester stated. Several placards at the demonstration demanded the cancellation of the $318 extra fee and highlighted the extended wait time.
In response, Tunji-Ojo assured affected citizens that prompt action would follow the investigation. “I have ordered an immediate investigation into these issues and will ensure that appropriate actions are taken swiftly,” he stated. He also thanked those affected for their patience and understanding, emphasizing a commitment to improving service delivery in line with global best practices.
