A 40-year-old lawyer, Abayomi Oladire, was stabbed by his client’s husband, Kunle Kuteyi, while performing his legal duties in Ondo West Local Government Area.

According to The Hope, a state-owned newspaper, Kuteyi attacked Oladire with a broken bottle for allegedly assisting his wife in preparing a divorce suit against him. The incident occurred around 4 pm on Sunday, July 14, 2024, in Ondo city.

Oladire was en route to his sister’s baby naming ceremony when Kuteyi stopped him and accused him of having an affair with his wife and helping her file for divorce. The conversation quickly escalated into an argument, leading Kuteyi to stab Oladire with a broken bottle.

Eyewitnesses reported that Oladire was stabbed multiple times before being rescued by passersby who rushed him to a nearby hospital. The suspect fled the scene. A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “We saw the two standing together, then the suspect hugged the victim and pushed him away. The next thing we saw was the suspect bringing out a broken bottle and stabbing the victim.”

Oladire shared his perspective on the incident: “The wife of the suspect brought a judgment to me indicating her husband was ordered to pay N2 million by the court. Upon reviewing it, I saw both the husband and wife were required to pay N2 million each. She then asked me to prepare divorce papers because her husband had lied about the case.”

However, the wife later decided against the divorce after her husband’s family intervened, which Oladire intended to inform the court about. On the day of the incident, Oladire encountered Kuteyi, who accused him of both dating his wife and preparing the divorce papers. Despite Oladire’s explanation, Kuteyi attacked him, biting his jaw and stabbing him with a broken bottle.

“In performing my legal duties, the suspect attempted to kill me. He is now walking freely, and despite reporting to all police stations in Ondo, he has not been arrested,” Oladire lamented.
