Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, a controversial Northern Islamic scholar, has expressed serious concerns about Nigeria’s current state, emphasizing the need for divine intervention and youth activism as key drivers for societal change.

Gumi criticized influential figures for their silence on the country’s issues, stating, “There are no elderly clerics, associations, groups, or persons who speak about the wrongdoings the country is experiencing. The country is just full of abnormalities.” He warned that this lack of vocal opposition allows the government to act without accountability, saying, “So because of this, the government will do what they wish to do without the masses’ consent, and no one will be there to say no.”

Gumi predicted a form of divine intervention through youth activism, suggesting that “God has sent some group of children to cause chaos to some of the government policies, not to destroy anything but to get the government into their right senses.” He indicated that youth-led movements would challenge the status quo and push for reforms.

Commenting on the suppression of dissent, Gumi pointed to the recent repercussions faced by a senator from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for criticizing government policies, noting, “No one can talk about bad government in Nigeria.” He further warned of potential clashes between authorities and youthful protesters, adding, “God now sends some children against them, and they can’t arrest the children because the children are many.”

Gumi also criticized religious leaders for stifling legitimate protests. He urged religious figures to support peaceful activism rather than hinder it, saying, “Instead of clerics to say let the children who are ready for protest go about it in an orderly and peaceful manner, they are busy bringing religion into it that protest is prohibited.”

There are plans for protests against the current hardships and President Bola Tinubu’s government policies in August, but some clerics have been discouraging participation.
