The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 142 recommendations to enhance future elections in Nigeria. INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu revealed this at the start of a two-day induction retreat for Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Monday in Lagos.
Yakubu mentioned that the commission had already published a review report of the 2023 elections, which is accessible on its website.
“In addition to the review report, we are also publishing the outcomes of retreats and engagements with stakeholders,” Yakubu stated.
Yakubu highlighted that the commission has made 142 recommendations aimed at improving Nigeria’s electoral process. He emphasized that once the report is finalized, it will be shared with the public, and there will be extensive engagement with Nigerians on these reforms.
He explained that the recommendations are categorized: the majority will be implemented through administrative actions by INEC, some by security agencies, and others will require amendments to the electoral legal framework by the National Assembly. Political parties and other stakeholders will also have roles in implementing certain reforms.
Yakubu urged Nigerians to be patient, assuring that the report would be shared soon after the process is completed.
He also noted that in Nigeria, election activities are ongoing year-round, with INEC continuously conducting elections. Since the inauguration of the National and State Assembly in 2023, INEC has held nine by-elections and has five more to conduct before the 2027 general elections. Additionally, the FCT Area Council elections are scheduled for 2026.
“As we innovate, we reflect, review, and implement,” Yakubu concluded.
