In a significant development, four inmates of the Warri Correctional Centre have been released following the Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Tessy Diai’s second quarterly visit to the facility. The fortunate inmates are Mr. Jeremiah Okotiebor and Lylon, both from Ozobo Town in Ijaw land, along with Umaru Abubakar and Mr. Peter Okru.
During the visit, Justice Diai reviewed a total of 360 warrants. However, no inmates were granted bail. She urged court registrars to adhere to the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, emphasizing the importance of submitting case files of remanded suspects to the Attorney-General’s office within the required three days.
Justice Diai praised the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Anthony Orhorhoro, magistrates, correctional officers, and other stakeholders for their efforts and contributions to the success of the visit.
The Deputy Comptroller of the Warri custodial centre, Mr. Edo Lucky, informed the Chief Judge that the facility now offers educational programs, allowing inmates to obtain primary and secondary school certificates while serving their sentences.
