On Wednesday morning, flooding overtook residential areas and major roads in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days.

According to NAN reports, the prolonged rain on Wednesday caused significant flooding in Ibeju-Lekki and other key locations, including Epe, Eredo, Bogije, Labora, Abijon, Sangotedo, Awoyaya, and Ibeju-Lekki itself.

Residents who spoke with NAN attributed the flooding to blocked waterways resulting from waste dumping in the area. Mr. Rasheed Ayobami, a resident of the Labora area, said his house was submerged due to the lack of a functional drainage system in his new site, which led to water flooding his home and damaging his belongings.

“There is too much water flowing into my compound, the entire house is submerged,” Ayobami stated. “I live in a new site without drainage, causing water to run into homes and making us homeless because we can’t sleep inside the water.”

Another resident, Seyi Arowosaye, criticized the frequent flooding on the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway, attributing it to blocked drains in the area. Arowosaye urged the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to clear the drains and called on residents to stop dumping waste in drainage systems to help control flooding.

Arowosaye also appealed to the Lagos State Government to expedite road repairs in the Sangotedo area of Ibeju-Lekki.

Mrs. Bola Fadugba, another resident, lamented the impact of the heavy rain and flooding in Labora. “I live in Labora, but during the rainy season, I relocate with my family to my younger sister’s house in the Eputu area,” she explained. “Flood has taken over my house due to the lack of drainage in the environment.”
