The clash between farmers and herders in Gauraki and Safa villages in Birnin Kudu Local Government council, Jigawa State, has resulted in three fatalities and several injuries. The conflict arose when herders from Katsina State migrated to Jigawa following an invitation from local herders, leading to the destruction of farmlands.

According to DSP Lawan Shiisu, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, the intervention of security agencies was necessary to disperse the warring factions and restore peace. Farmers mobilized to protect their farmlands, resulting in clashes that saw houses being set ablaze and casualties on both sides.

The security response involved patrol teams from the Area Commander of Birnin Kudu Area Command, alongside Nigeria Security And Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN). Despite the intervention, two individualsβ€”one from each groupβ€”lost their lives, and there was additional loss of life due to a drowning incident related to the conflict.

Currently, normalcy has been restored, with ongoing investigations into the incident. The police have warned both farmers and herders against taking the law into their own hands and assured that findings from the state government-appointed committee will guide further actions to prevent future conflicts.
