A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to curtail reckless spending of Nigerian public funds.
Momodu shared his concerns in a statement on Thursday, cautioning the ruling All Progressive Congress against intimidating those offering sincere feedback on the government’s performance.
Momodu stated, “Your Excellency, I am writing this open letter to you as a concerned friend and brother. Although I am a member of the opposition, our relationship has a long history. I owe you one thing: TRUTH. It is clear that truth is often the first casualty in the Presidential villa. This happens because many Nigerians are adept at manipulating those in power, quickly deifying them. I write today not because I expect you to act on my suggestions, but to ensure it is recorded that someone provided you with a truthful perspective. I hope that some of your friends will read and convey this to you during a moment of reflection.
- Economic Crisis: Nigeria is in serious trouble. Our economy has nearly collapsed. You have been spending excessively at a time that calls for strict frugality. Please stop this reckless spending of scarce resources. Purchasing presidential jets, constructing extravagant monuments, and distributing cash as palliatives are indicators of a failed and careless government. By curbing excessive spending, you can free up substantial resources for meaningful development.
- Second Term Focus: I believe you are wasting resources because you are keen on securing a second term. However, the best assurance of a second term is PERFORMANCE. Nigerians do not expect miracles, but they do not want their situation to worsen. My advice: invest in vocational skills for our talented youths, heavily invest in local agriculture, and upgrade educational institutions. Distributing cash through politicians is ineffective and shows a lack of insight.
- Beware of Flattery: Be cautious of those in the National Assembly who idolize you. NDUME is your true friend. Listen to him, as there is danger ahead.
- Enforce Discipline: As a leader, you must enforce discipline. Your new ally, NYESOM WIKE, has publicly disrespected you regarding the FUBARA issue. You need to sanction him before he causes further chaos in Nigeria.”
