The Adamawa/Taraba Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 85 drums of petrol, each containing 200 liters, which were being illegally transported to Cameroon. Additionally, 795 jerry cans of petrol, each with a 25-liter capacity, were found hidden on a bush path near the Sahuda section of the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
Comptroller Garba Bashir, the Customs Area Controller for the Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, announced these seizures during a news briefing at the command headquarters in Yola. He also reported the interception of a Carina E vehicle with a hidden compartment filled with petrol along the Girei-Wuro Boki route in Adamawa State.
Bashir revealed that the command has recorded 17 cases of various item seizures over the past six weeks, totaling an aggregate duty value of N36.9 million.
He explained that petrol smuggling persists due to high demand and higher prices in neighboring countries like Cameroon, Nigeria, and Benin. Despite the removal of the PMS subsidy, the smuggling of petrol from Nigeria continues. Bashir assured that the command is enhancing its capabilities and conducting operations to thwart smuggling activities, emphasizing their commitment to significantly reducing smuggling.
