The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Anambra State Chapter, began an indefinite strike on Monday due to the state government’s refusal to pay the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure (CONJUS). A correspondent from NAN who visited the High Courts at Ekwueme Square, Chief Magistrate’s Courts, and Customary Courts in Amawbia, Awka, reported that court proceedings were halted.

No magistrates, judges, or court staff were present at the premises, with only security personnel on duty. Lawyers and litigants who arrived were turned away as the gates were locked.

Mr. Henry Ezeoke, the State Chairman of JUSUN, explained that the strike was in response to the government’s failure to honor agreements made in 2011 and 2015 to implement CONJUS. Despite exploring all possible avenues, the state government has not complied with the agreement.

“The union issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government, which was ignored. We believe that downing tools is the only language the government understands. Therefore, the strike will last indefinitely until the government meets the conditions and pending further directives by the union,” Ezeoke stated.
