The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria has attributed the increase in building collapses, which have led to numerous deaths, to government negligence in enforcing laws. Dr. Samson Opaluwah, Chairman of the Council, highlighted this issue while addressing the recent building collapses in Kubwa, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and a school building in Jos.
Dr. Opaluwah emphasized the need for stringent punishment for those found responsible to prevent future incidents. He noted that these collapses frequently occur in urban centers, where professionalism should be at its highest.
“The challenge we face now is the government’s enforcement of its laws. We need to punish those who have been negligent in the past,” he stated.
This statement follows the rescue of four individuals from a collapsed two-story residential building on Saturday in Kubwa, Abuja. Just a day earlier, at least 22 people died and 132 were injured when a school building in Plateau collapsed on its pupils.
According to a recent report by the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, Nigeria has witnessed at least 135 building collapse incidents and 26 deaths between 2022 and 2024.
