The Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN) has announced the creation of a Protest Observatory and Communications Room to oversee rights compliance and report on activities surrounding the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
WYSN has declared its strong support for the nationwide protest, set to commence on August 1, 2024, aiming to challenge the government’s economic policies and advocate for citizens’ rights.
Comrades Salako Kayode and Iortyom Moses, Southern and Northern Coordinators of WYSN respectively, emphasized in a statement that “peaceful protest is an inalienable right of citizens guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.” WYSN encourages Nigerians to disregard any threats and confidently join the protests.
The group firmly urged, “We call on Nigerians to ignore the intimidating rhetoric of government agents and boldly come out en masse to exercise their constitutional right of dissent.”
WYSN criticized the current administration’s neo-liberal economic policies, claiming they have resulted in widespread hardship and poverty. The group argued, “These policies weaken the currency value and erode the purchasing power of the Naira, leaving the people in unmitigated poverty and hardship.”
The organization condemned the government’s alignment with the IMF and World Bank, asserting that these policies only benefit the wealthy. WYSN remarked, “Political office holders and their cronies, beneficiaries of these neo-liberal economic policies, live in flamboyant affluence while the masses suffer.”
The Protest Observatory and Communications Room initiative aims to ensure that citizens’ rights are upheld during the protests. WYSN stated, “This initiative is to ensure that citizens’ rights are upheld during the protests.”
WYSN called on President Bola Tinubu to protect the constitutional rights of the people. They warned, “The President will be held accountable should he fail to protect citizens who exercise their right to protest.” Additionally, WYSN urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to support the protest, highlighting the inadequacy of the N70,000 minimum wage in addressing the issues faced by the Nigerian working class.
The organization stressed the need for a broader political movement to address the needs of the masses. They concluded, “It is imperative for the masses to mobilize towards an alternative that will bring about true and enduring transformation and end the sufferings of the masses.”
