The House of Representatives has committed to donating 50 percent of their salaries for six months to combat hunger in Nigeria.

This decision was announced during a plenary session led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu on Thursday.

Deputy Speaker Kalu proposed the amendment, urging his colleagues to sacrifice half of their salaries for this period. He stated, “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent for a period of six months.”

Earlier, SaharaReporters highlighted how Prophet Isa El Buba, a popular pastor, encouraged Nigerians to protest against President Bola Tinubu’s government if the current hardships persist beyond a week. In a viral video, El Buba criticized Tinubu and his ministers for failing to fulfill their promises since taking office in 2023. He asserted, “We are citizens of this country. We want to see action in the next one week. You must rise to the occasion that we are tired as citizens of this country.”

El Buba is not the first religious leader to criticize Tinubu’s administration. Last week, controversial Islamic cleric Sheik Dr. Ahmad Gumi also urged Nigerians to engage in peaceful protests to convey their grievances, emphasizing that protests are an essential tool for driving change.
