The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has been captured on video allegedly ordering his security detail to assault an Islamic cleric during a prayer event. The incident occurred at the 3-day Fidau prayer for the deceased wife of his deputy in Minna. According to sources at the event, the cleric had volunteered to offer prayers, which apparently angered Governor Bago.

In the video, Governor Bago is seen addressing sympathizers, initially welcoming prayers from any cleric. However, when the unidentified man stepped forward to pray, Bago became visibly upset, questioning the man’s authority and eventually ordering his security personnel to physically restrain him. He can be heard instructing them, “Slap him, I say slap him very well… Oya, go and arrest him, deal with him very well, and bring him back.”

The governor’s actions have sparked controversy and condemnation, with reports suggesting a pattern of aggressive behavior towards aides and others perceived to have offended him. The incident has raised concerns about the conduct of public officials and respect for religious leaders in the state.
