Superintendent of Police Ibrahim Sini disclosed that he rejected a N150 million bribe from Lagos businessman Akintoye Akindele to maintain his peace of mind. Akindele, who was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja in August 2023, is currently held at the Kuje correctional center.
According to the charge sheet, the bribe was intended to persuade the police to let Akindele escape abroad and to produce a favorable report for him following the investigation. Sini led the Inspector General of Police’s team of investigators working on the case against Akindele.
Speaking at a dinner organized in his honor on Friday, Sini expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am very happy to be here and want to appreciate the organizers of this program. They have surpassed my expectations and motivated me further.”
During the event, Sini was awarded a plot of land in Abuja. Reflecting on the bribery incident, he recounted, “Yes, I remember when it happened. The person in question asked me, ‘Do you want to be rich?’ He said, ‘This is an opportunity for you to be rich.'”
Sini responded that his desire for wealth depended on the kind of riches offered. “I would like to have money that allows me to sleep peacefully at night. I don’t want to have something that makes me anxious and forces me to hide. So, I decided to do the right thing to have peace of mind and uphold justice for myself, my organization—the Nigeria Police—and the country at large.”
He also advised the youth not to compromise their integrity for anything.
Presenting the land documents to Sini, the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, commended Sini’s conduct, stating that it brought pride to the Nigerian Police Force.
