FCT, Abuja – Ogenyi Onazi, a former midfielder for the Super Eagles, has expressed his sorrow and highlighted the dangerous conditions on Nigerian roads after a truck accident claimed the life of his sister-in-law and left his brother, Oche Thompson, severely injured.
Onazi revealed that his brother’s wife died instantly in the collision, while his brother survived but suffered multiple dislocated joints and is scheduled for surgery.
The midfielder, who plays for Italian Serie D club Avezzano, shared the tragic news on his Instagram on Friday, June 21. He described how, on Tuesday, June 18, around 4 PM, his brother was driving with his wife when a truck loaded with fertilizer lost control and crashed into more than ten cars. The impact killed his brother’s wife on the spot, while his brother miraculously survived despite severe injuries.
Onazi lamented that the truck driver, who lacked a proper driving license, was responsible for the accident. He urged the Federal Government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to take action, noting the increasing fatalities caused by reckless truck and tanker drivers.
“Driving in Nigeria, you will see that many drivers lack proper driving knowledge. Recently, truck and tanker drivers have been responsible for many deaths due to their reckless driving,” Onazi stated.
