Gunmen abducted Mr. Chizoba Ugwueze, a former councillor of Ikem Ward 1 in Enugu State, on Friday, killing his friend, Ejike Ugwueze, who was riding with him. The assailants have demanded a ransom of N100 million for Chizoba’s release.

According to eyewitnesses, the former councillor and his friend were returning from a burial in Ikem community when they encountered the criminals. Chizoba was driving, with Ejike in the front passenger seat, when the gunmen attacked. Reports suggest that Ejike was shot as Chizoba attempted to reverse the vehicle, possibly to escape.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. that Friday. A family member, speaking anonymously, dismissed claims of assassination, clarifying that the motive was kidnapping for ransom. The kidnappers have demanded a hefty sum for Chizoba’s release.

The family member also debunked reports of Ejike’s involvement in a council election, stating that he hadn’t expressed any intention to contest. Concerns were raised about the security of the road where the incident occurred, with calls for increased police presence.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident, with investigations ongoing. The tragic event underscores the security challenges faced by motorists and commuters in the area, exacerbated by the absence of local security agents due to unpaid wages.

A viral video circulating on WhatsApp shows Ejike’s lifeless body in a bullet-riddled Lexus SUV, highlighting the severity of the situation.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urged to prioritize the safe return of Chizoba Ugwueze and take measures to enhance security along the troubled route, ensuring the safety of residents and travelers alike.
