In a surprising turn of events, Finidi George has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles. George’s resignation was confirmed to Channels Television on Saturday.
“Yes, it is true. I have resigned,” George wrote in response to inquiries.
Despite the confirmation from George, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to issue an official statement regarding his departure.
George’s tenure saw mixed results, including a 1-1 draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan. These outcomes have jeopardized Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Under George’s leadership, the team continued its winless streak in the qualifiers, having previously recorded two draws under former coach Jose Peseiro.
Currently, Nigeria is positioned fifth in Group C, only above Zimbabwe, in the race for World Cup qualification.
The team’s underwhelming performance in the recent matches led to significant backlash from fans, many of whom called for George’s dismissal.
