The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed details about a recent raid on nightclubs in Akure, Ondo State, conducted by its operatives. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Saturday, resulted in the arrest of 127 individuals suspected of being involved in internet fraud.
According to the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the raid was executed after receiving intelligence about a gathering of alleged fraudsters at what was termed a “Yahoo Party.” Oyewale emphasized that the operation was meticulously planned and executed to apprehend the suspects.
The sting operation took place simultaneously at Signature and Abah Clubs on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Initially, the party was scheduled for Wednesday, but upon discovering that the EFCC was aware of their plans, the organizers rescheduled it to Saturday. Oyewale noted, “The alleged internet fraudsters were arrested in an early morning sting operation at a ‘Yahoo Party’ held simultaneously at Signature and Abah Clubs on Saturday, June 8, 2024, in Akure, Ondo State.”
Dismissing claims that some soldiers were injured during the operation, Oyewale confirmed that those arrested are currently in the agency’s custody in Ibadan, where they are undergoing profiling. He stated, “The arrest was a result of diligent operation, and we had followed them carefully before we eventually went for the arrest. They will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
