The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has hinted at potentially supporting his Labour Party counterpart from the last election, Peter Obi, in 2027.
The former Vice President, who is currently in merger discussions with some opposition political parties, mentioned he would readily back Obi in the next election if his party selects the former Anambra governor. The Sun reported that Atiku revealed this during an interview with BBC Hausa Service.
It is notable that Obi and Atiku recently had a closed-door meeting, leading to speculations about a possible merger of opposition political parties for the 2027 general elections. Confirming the efforts by opposition parties to align and challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election, Atiku stated, βWe can merge to achieve a common goal. Itβs possible, and nothing can prevent it if we aim to achieve that.β
Atiku emphasized that if the new party decides it is the South-East’s turn and Peter Obi is chosen, he would not hesitate to support him. He remarked, βI have said repeatedly, even before the 2023 general elections, that if PDP zones the presidential ticket to the South or specifically the South-East, I wouldnβt contest it.”
He added, βAs long as itβs the party’s decision, I will comply. I contested the 2023 presidential ticket because it was open to all party members.β
