Bandits reportedly carried out a deadly assault in Zurak village, Bashar District of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State. The fatal attack claimed the lives of more than 40 persons, including vigilantes.
The attack transpired around 5:00 pm on Monday, catching the community’s residents off guard as they went about their daily routines. Hindered by the region’s poor communication infrastructure, the residents were unable to promptly report the harrowing incident.
Sahpi’i Sambo, a youth leader in the area, recounted the horrific details of the assault to Daily Trust. He said, “More than 40 people were killed while many were injured. Residents of the village have fled to neighboring communities for cover. As of yesterday, security personnel had not yet arrived at the community. It was deadly.”
The severity of the attack has left the community in turmoil. The residents, who fled in fear for their lives, are now taking refuge in neighboring areas, uncertain of when it will be safe to return home. The slow response from security forces has further exacerbated the community’s distress, as they continue to deal with the aftermath of the brutal assault.
Despite the gravity of the situation, as of the time of this report, the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, had not issued an official statement concerning the incident. This lack of communication from the authorities has raised concerns among the residents and the wider public, who are anxiously waiting for reassurance and decisive action.
The attack in Zurak village is a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in various parts of Nigeria. The inability to quickly report and respond to such incidents highlights the urgent need for improved communication and security infrastructure in remote areas.
As the community mourns the loss of its members and grapples with the trauma of the attack, there is a pressing call for increased security presence and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The local and state governments are being urged to address these security gaps and ensure the safety of all residents.
In the wake of this tragedy, it is crucial for the authorities to not only provide immediate relief and support to the affected families but also to take long-term steps to strengthen the region’s security framework. This includes deploying more security personnel, improving communication networks, and fostering collaboration between the community and law enforcement agencies to ensure a swift and effective response to any future threats.
