The National Judicial Council (NJC) has proposed the promotion of Justice Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, wife of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the Appeal Court. Justice Nyesom-Wike, formerly the First Lady of Rivers State, is one of 22 individuals recommended for elevation to the appellate court. Currently serving as a Justice in the Rivers State High Court, her nomination reflects the NJC’s assessment of her qualifications and performance.
Similarly, Oluwakemi Victoria Ariwoola, daughter-in-law of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, is among the 12 judges considered for elevation to the Federal High Court in Abuja. Both Suzzette and Victoria are part of a larger group of 86 judges under consideration for promotion by the Interview Committee on Appointment of Judicial Officers of all Superior Courts of Record in Nigeria.
The NJC made these recommendations during its 105th plenary meeting, held between May 15 and 16, 2024. Pending approval from the President and respective State Governors, all recommended candidates will be sworn in, as stated by the NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, in a statement dated May 16, 2024.
