The Coalition of Civil Society Networks, in conjunction with the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), has raised concerns about the disappearance of Dr. Adejare Adegbenro, a commissioner of the Nigeria International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), following his compliance with an invitation from the Nigeria Police Force.

According to a press statement released on Thursday, Adegbenro reportedly responded to a petition against him and appeared before the Nigeria Police Force on Friday, April 26, 2024. Since then, his whereabouts have remained unknown to his family and associates.

The statement highlights Adegbenro’s significant contributions to advocating for the establishment of a national commission for controlling the proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons, as well as his appointment as a professional member of the European Police Federation (EuroPolice). It expresses concern over his sudden disappearance and the lack of official information regarding his situation.

Despite unconfirmed reports of his release on April 29, 2024, his phone remains unreachable, and his location remains undisclosed. The coalition emphasizes Adegbenro’s exemplary track record in public service and his commitment to Nigeria’s welfare, calling for transparency and adherence to due process in his case.

Citing the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), the coalition urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure Adegbenro’s release and provide clarity on his legal status. It calls for a thorough investigation into the allegations against him and emphasizes the importance of upholding human rights and the rule of law in addressing his situation.
