The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon Philip Agbese, has welcomed Nigeria’s return to its former national anthem as a symbol of its golden era.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday after the 2024 Democracy Day National Assembly joint session, Agbese also praised President Bola Tinubu for his prompt actions on legislative matters. He commended Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for his exceptional leadership and dedication to democratic governance.
He noted that in just one year, President Tinubu has shown an unwavering commitment to signing bills into law promptly, demonstrating his administration’s responsiveness to citizens’ needs. Agbese emphasized that the signing of the National Anthem and Student Loan Bills into law exemplifies President Tinubu’s willingness to collaborate with the legislature to drive meaningful change.
According to him, the swift attention to these bills signals that the administration is focused on delivering tangible results, not just promises. “President Tinubu’s legislative approach has fostered a collaborative environment, promoting open dialogue and constructive engagement between the executive and legislative branches,” Agbese stated.
“This cooperation has led to the rapid passage and signing of critical bills addressing pressing national issues. As a parliamentarian, I have seen firsthand the President’s commitment to democratic principles and his openness to diverse viewpoints.
“His willingness to accept feedback and suggestions demonstrates his genuine desire to serve the nation’s best interests. The swift signing of the National Anthem and Student Loan Bills, which took less than 48 hours, is a testament to this engagement with the legislature.
“I’m particularly pleased with the return to our old national anthem as it marks a significant step towards the country’s return to its glory days. This was an era of prosperity when the economy thrived, infrastructure was robust, agriculture flourished, and our educational system was among the best.
“This anthem, with its familiar lyrics and stirring melody, evokes nostalgia and patriotism in many Nigerians. It reminds us of our history, struggles, and triumphs. Its return is a welcome move that resonates with citizens from all walks of life.
“The old national anthem is more than just a song; it symbolizes our shared values and aspirations. Its lyrics speak to our collective desire for unity, peace, and progress, reminding us of the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the struggles of our national heroes.
“In a diverse country like ours, the national anthem is one of the few elements that bind us together. It’s a common thread that weaves through our collective identity and purpose. I applaud the decision to return to our old national anthem and urge all Nigerians to embrace this move with open arms. Let us sing our national anthem with pride and passion, and let its lyrics inspire us to work towards a brighter future for ourselves and generations to come.”
In less than a year, Agbese continued, the Speaker has shown unwavering dedication to the legislative agenda, working tirelessly to ensure the passage of crucial bills and motions that have positively impacted Nigerians’ lives.
Agbese added that Speaker Abbas’ leadership has been marked by transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, earning him the respect of lawmakers, citizens, and the international community.
“As we approach the first anniversary of Speaker Abbas’ tenure, I join my colleagues and the nation in celebrating a year of visionary leadership and exemplary service,” he said. “Under Speaker Abbas’ guidance, our parliament has seen unprecedented growth, productivity, and unity. His unwavering commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and progress has inspired us all to work towards a common goal: a better Nigeria for all.
“Speaker Abbas’ achievements are numerous, notably in uniting the legislature, fostering cooperation, championing critical legislation addressing the nation’s challenges, and promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“His leadership has been a beacon of hope, inspiring us to strive for excellence and work towards a brighter future. His dedication, wisdom, and compassion have earned him the respect and admiration of all Nigerians.”
