Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are currently staging a protest in Abuja against the “Band A” tariff hike, targeting the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
Earlier, these workers peacefully demonstrated at the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), demanding a reversal of the tariff increment. Their placards bore messages such as “Nigerian Workers and People Reject Electricity Tarif Increase” and “NLC And TUC Say Reverse It Now.”
Led by NLC President Joe Ajero, the protesters arrived at the Ministry of Power, demanding Minister Adelabu Adebayo to address them. Despite giving the Minister a few minutes to come out, he failed to appear, reportedly fleeing upon the protesters’ arrival.
The NLC President then instructed workers to cut the power supply to the building, leaving the Minister in darkness. Subsequently, all staff were ordered to leave the premises, with the main gate locked with a padlock.
The protesters announced plans to head to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to shut down its facility.
