Africa’s wealthiest individual and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has affirmed that Nigeria will cease gasoline imports from next month, owing to the plans of the Dangote Refinery. He asserted the refinery’s capacity to supply not only Nigeria but also West Africa’s gasoline and diesel needs, along with the continent’s aviation fuel demand. Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali, Dangote expressed optimism about transforming Africa’s energy landscape.
He outlined the progress made by the refinery to ensure Africa’s self-sufficiency in the energy sector, emphasizing the production of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel for West Africa and Central Africa. Additionally, he highlighted the production of polypropylene, polyethylene, and base oil to meet Africa’s demand, aiming to eliminate the need for imports. Dangote projected Africa’s self-sufficiency in fertilizer production within a few years.
Reflecting on the refinery’s achievements since its commissioning in February, Dangote emphasized its significance in reducing petroleum product imports across Africa. He underscored the importance of producing finished products rather than solely exporting raw materials to create jobs and economic growth.
Despite challenges faced during the refinery’s construction, Dangote remained resolute in his commitment to its success, overcoming skepticism and pushback from vested interests. He emphasized the necessity of continuous investment in Africa’s oil sector to sustain production levels.
Dangote also addressed the issue of policy inconsistency, highlighting it as a significant challenge for African entrepreneurs. He called for policy reviews and support from leaders to ensure a conducive environment for trade and investment across the continent.
