Nigeria’s online community has been left in shock and outrage following a post by Chude Nnamdi on his X account, formerly known as Twitter, highlighting a disturbing case of police brutality and impunity.
“The Nigeria police have done it again, sending this innocent man to an early grave. This happened yesterday evening in Kubwa, Abuja,” Nnamdi wrote, accompanied by a heart-wrenching image of the victim.
“On his face is a tear gas canister, shot directly at him. He died this morning at the National Hospital Abuja.”
In a plea for assistance, he added, “Please Nigerians, his family needs help, his wife and kids need help.”
The post included a screenshot of a message from an anonymous source, which detailed the tragic incident:
“Good afternoon Chief, please a friend and club member was shot with tear gas last night close to his house and right now he’s dead. He was driving, just about to enter his street, and hit an Okada rider. He had already settled with the Okada rider before police officers stopped them and attempted to arrest both of them. They refused to follow the officers to the police station. Then an officer came down and shot him directly in the face. He died this morning at the National Hospital Abuja.”
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Abuja, Mrs. Josephine, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls and message from our reporters.
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for police reform in Nigeria. The case is still under investigation, and we will provide more updates as we delve deeper into this matter.
