In a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday, security personnel attached to Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State intervened to prevent Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives from apprehending former Kogi governor, Yahaya Bello, in Abuja.
The EFCC had earlier surrounded Belloβs residence in Wuse, Abuja, but their efforts were thwarted when Governor Ododo arrived at the scene with a significant security presence.
Sources within the EFCC revealed that a direct confrontation with the governorβs security detail was narrowly avoided, potentially averting a violent clash.
According to insider information, the Inspector General of Police allegedly reinforced Belloβs security team through Governor Ododo, effectively obstructing the EFCC’s attempt to make the arrest.
This development follows the EFCC’s recent efforts to track down Bello, who stands accused of financial impropriety involving billions of naira during his tenure as governor.
Notably, the EFCC had managed to locate Bello in Abuja by tracking the mobile phone of one of his aides, as Bello had intentionally left his own device behind in Kogi to evade detection.
Despite the EFCC’s persistent pursuit, Belloβs legal representatives have vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as politically motivated and baseless.
This latest standoff underscores the intensifying legal battle between Bello and the EFCC, as the anti-graft agency seeks to prosecute him for alleged financial misconduct during his time in office.
As tensions escalate, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case, which has significant implications for Nigeriaβs ongoing fight against corruption.
It bothers me how the police would be aiding and abetting criminal acts but claim to still be the protectors of the law
