The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially closed down the Alaba International Market located in the Ojo area of the state. This decision was prompted by a series of sanitation offenses, including failure to settle waste bills, improper waste disposal practices, and severe environmental sanitation violations.

The announcement of the market’s closure was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, on Monday. Alaba International Market, one of the largest and most prominent markets in Lagos, now stands sealed due to these grave infractions.

The Lagos State government has embarked on an assertive campaign to address these issues, recently taking similar action to close down the Mile 12 International Market and the Owode Onirin Market, both located along Ikorodu Road, in response to reports of indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse. Furthermore, the state government has also shuttered other notable markets like the Ladipo Auto Parts Market and several establishments in the Mushin area, as well as various markets throughout the state, in response to violations of environmental regulations.

This decisive action underscores the commitment of the Lagos State Government to fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible community. It sends a clear message that sanitation offenses will not be tolerated and that all businesses and residents must adhere to established guidelines for waste management and environmental hygiene.

The closure of Alaba International Market serves as a pivotal step in this ongoing effort to promote a safer and more sustainable environment within Lagos State, protecting the health and well-being of its residents while ensuring the proper management of waste and sanitation throughout the region.
