Chiedu Ebie, recently named as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) board chairman, finds himself under scrutiny due to his alleged involvement in former Governor James Ibori’s questionable financial dealings, a connection that led Ibori to incarceration. The appointment, endorsed by President Bola Tinubu, has drawn attention to Ebie’s background, raising questions about the president’s Renewed Hope agenda for the NDDC.

In a move that aims to bring a fresh perspective to the administration of the NDDC, President Tinubu announced the appointment of a new board and management, with Lauretta Onochie at the helm. Alongside this decision, Chiedu Ebie from Delta State was chosen as the chairman of the NDDC, as conveyed by a statement from Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s media aide. The announcement outlined President Tinubu’s expectations for a successful administration aligned with his agenda.

However, reports from SaharaReporters unveil a complex web of affiliations that cast a shadow over Ebie’s appointment. Allegedly linked to former Delta governor and ex-convict James Ibori, Ebie’s connections raise questions about the extent of his involvement in illicit financial activities. Sources suggest that Ibori, known for his close association with President Tinubu, played a role in facilitating Ebie’s appointment, prompting further scrutiny into the selection process.

Ibori’s criminal history includes an extradition to the UK in 2011 after UAE security apprehended him in Dubai. This marked the beginning of his legal battle, which culminated in Ibori’s conviction on 10 counts of fraud and money laundering. As Ebie’s in-law, Ibori’s influence adds complexity to Ebie’s position, particularly given Ibori’s prior relationship with President Tinubu.

Ebie’s career trajectory includes roles such as Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State in 2015 and Secretary to the State Government in 2019. Despite his political engagements, his affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and allegations of anti-party activities during the 2023 general elections cast doubt on his alignment with President Tinubu’s vision.

SaharaReporters’ investigation in September 2015 revealed Ebie’s implication in money-laundering inquiries connected to Ibori in the UK. Ebie’s involvement in Ibori’s financial schemes and his implication in charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) further compound the suspicions surrounding his appointment.

The EFCC source indicated that Ebie’s legal journey is far from over, as the agency intends to pursue charges against him once Ibori concludes his 13-year jail term in London. With a history of legal implications and ongoing court cases, Ebie’s appointment raises concerns about his ability to lead the NDDC effectively.

In light of these revelations, Ebie has responded to the allegations, expressing his lack of awareness regarding the matter and highlighting his ongoing appeal against the previous judgment. Acknowledging the sensitive nature of the situation, Ebie emphasizes the importance of refraining from discussing matters under judicial consideration.

As the controversy surrounding Chiedu Ebie’s appointment unfolds, it casts a spotlight on the intricate connections between political figures and their histories, underscoring the challenges that lie ahead for the NDDC under his leadership.
