In a solemn ceremony that reflects the nation’s profound grief, 22 military personnel who tragically lost their lives in combat in Niger State are being laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The heart-wrenching event follows the devastating announcement made by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on August 14, revealing the loss of at least 36 officers in a battle. These brave souls had been engaged in a critical operation against insurgents in the Zungeru area of Niger State when their helicopter was downed.
These valiant troops had been swiftly deployed to Kundu village in the Wushishi Local Government Area following a series of heinous attacks carried out by bandits in the region. While some of the fallen officers had already been interred by their bereaved families, the poignant ceremony on Friday honors the remaining 22, ensuring they receive the respect and honor they deserve.
Present at the heartrending ceremony are dignitaries including the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and other prominent service chiefs. Their presence pays tribute to the dedication and sacrifice exhibited by these fallen heroes in their unwavering commitment to the defense of their nation.
This poignant moment reminds the nation of the sacrifices made by its armed forces in the unrelenting pursuit of peace and security. The memory of these 22 officers will forever be etched in the hearts of a grateful nation.
