President Bola Tinubu has allocated N70 billion from the N819 billion palliative fund to the House of Representatives, aiming to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians. The President’s letter, read by Speaker Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, stated that the allocation was specifically intended to support the working conditions of new members.

During a second reading of the Bill for the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation of N819 billion, Majority Leader Rep. Julius Ihonvere emphasized that the funds were earmarked for providing palliatives to Nigerians in order to alleviate the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu praised President Tinubu’s decision, highlighting the positive impact of the palliative on the legislative body. Mr. Kalu commended the President for his attentiveness and commended his boldness and courage.

He emphasized the importance of having leaders with boldness and courage during critical times in a country’s life, stating that Nigeria appears to have found such a leader in President Tinubu. Mr. Kalu noted that removing the subsidy required courage and boldness, and emphasized the need for leaders who are sensitive to the welfare of the people.

He further clarified that the allocated funds would address the challenges faced by the National Assembly, including those specific to the House of Representatives. Mr. Kalu emphasized that the executive is responding to the aspirations of the people, and the allocated funds would not be distributed freely.
