The Department of Development Control, under the FCT Administration, is currently overseeing the demolition of the well-known UTC market located in Area 10 of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In the early hours of the morning, armed personnel accompanied by earth-moving machines arrived at the market premises. They prevented traders from removing their goods while initiating the demolition process of this extensive market, which has served as the primary center for printing businesses in the nation’s capital for decades.
The market has gained popularity as a hub for electrical appliances, particularly refrigerators and air conditioners. This has significantly contributed to the substantial tax revenue generated by the federal government on an annual basis from the predominantly Igbo traders in the area.
Traders in the market are openly expressing their protests against the abrupt demolition of their sole source of livelihood, without sufficient prior notice.
As previously reported, the demolition of the market began in April and has resumed today under the supervision of FCTA officials.
