In a bid to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on citizens, the Federal Government has initiated a project to install solar systems in rural communities in Lagos. According to reports from DailyTrust, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has successfully installed solar systems in schools and public health facilities at Makoko, located in the Yaba area of the metropolis.

Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, the Managing Director of the REA, revealed this development during an inspection tour of the installed Solar Home Systems (SHS) at Makoko. He emphasized that the deployment of solar systems aligns with the FG’s National Poverty Reduction and Growth Strategy.

While the primary role of the agency is to provide electricity access to unserved and underserved areas, Engr Ahmad emphasized that the current efforts are more focused on serving as a social service to address the environmental and economic challenges faced by the community. The visit to Makoko is part of a larger initiative covering the South West region, including sites in Osogbo, Osun, and Ijebu-Ode in Ogun states.

Engr Ahmad emphasized the effectiveness of a decentralized approach to electrify communities like Makoko, considering the limitations of operating a traditional grid system. He further stated, “We are offering rural dwellers free solar power as part of the ongoing efforts to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the less privileged Nigerians.”

The installation of solar systems in Lagos rural communities is a proactive step by the Federal Government to provide sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions while mitigating the effects of fuel subsidy removal on the citizens.
